Cancer travel insurance is available at every stage, including during active treatment, with the right insurer. You'll be asked about cancer type, staging, treatment plan, recent scans and spread. Specialist insurers (often the only realistic option during active treatment) typically declare cover within minutes, online.
Why declaration matters
Pre-existing medical conditions are the single biggest cause of refused holiday insurance claims in the UK. Insurers underwrite a policy based on what you tell them - if a condition wasn't declared, the related claim will almost always be refused, even if the condition seems unrelated. The single biggest factors are typically the medical cover limit, the destination, the length of trip, the age of each traveller and any declared medical conditions. As a rough guide for healthy UK adults: a single-trip European policy can start from around £8–£20 per person; worldwide-excluding-USA tends to sit £15–£40; USA, Canada and the Caribbean (priced for very high medical costs) often £25–£70+. An annual multi-trip policy frequently pays for itself if you take more than two or three trips a year. Older travellers and those with declared medical conditions will see higher quotes - but specialist insurers usually offer much better value than mainstream brands in those cases.

When to buy holiday insurance
Buy your policy on the day you book, not the week before you fly. Cancellation cover only protects events that happen after the policy starts and after the trip is booked. If you book a trip and only insure it a month before departure, anything that happens in between - a new diagnosis, a bereavement, jury service, an FCDO change - won't be covered for cancellation. Annual multi-trip policies start covering cancellation from the date the policy starts (or a trip is booked, depending on the wording).

- Be accurate and consistent in everything you tell the insurer - discrepancies cause delays
UK regulation and your consumer rights
Travel and holiday insurance sold in the UK is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). That means insurers and intermediaries must treat customers fairly, give clear product information (the IPID - Insurance Product Information Document) and explain how to complain. If you can't resolve a complaint within eight weeks, you can escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) free of charge.
